Lighting should also be kept no brighter than necessary. Using the lowest required light level helps prevent excess reflection from surfaces, which can contribute to unwanted brightness in the night sky.
The guidance further suggests using lighting only when necessary. Timers and motion detectors are recommended to make sure lights are available when needed, dimmed when possible, and turned off when not in use.
